Earth Tone Mix

(Vegetable Ivory, Bone, Wood, Celluloid, Bakelite, Porcelain, Leather and Bison Horn)

The most prominant type of button used in my Earth Tone Mix line are ones made from Vegetable Ivory, the nut of the Tagua Palm, which grows in the tropical rainforests of South America. The nuts are 5 to 10 cm. in size, with a brown skin, and white pulp inside. When left in the sun to dry, the nuts become so hard that it requires a hacksaw to cut one in half. This Vegetable Ivory can then be carved into such objects as chess pieces, dice, needle boxes, and most of all BUTTONS. These buttons have a beautiful sheen, a distinctive grain, and can be found in a countless variety of rich hues including tans, browns, even reds and greens. Most Vegetable Ivory buttons predate the widespread use of plastic.
